Fayette Education Foundation Provides Learning Opportunities at James Lane Allen Elementary
Lex., KY - 2005

The Fayette Education Foundation awarded our school, James Lane Allen Elementary, $5000 for its work on closing the achievement gap. We have used that money during the 2005-2006 school year to again help us close those achievement gaps. The money was used to buy Reading and Math materials to help supplement classroom teachers and our Extend School Services (ESS) program. The reading materials we have purchased are the Early Soar to Success program, and supplemental Math materials for students that are not meeting the appropriate Reading and Math standards. The materials are being used in conjunction with our ESS program during the school day. We are currently targeting our Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade students with our ESS program.

The materials that we purchased with the money from the Fayette Education Foundation have allowed us to refine our interventions for those students with the biggest needs. This will allow those students to be on a level playing field with other students throughout their educational careers. When we do our final assessments in the spring we will see the benefits of the Fayette Education Foundation’s generosity.

What A Difference The Fayette Education Foundation Makes at VPE!
Lex., KY - 2005

During the fall of 2004 the statewide educational network was taken to a new level, mandating that computers in all buildings could only run Microsoft 2000 and XP. Consequently, Veterans Park Elementary lost 82 computers that could not be upgraded. One of the hidden costs in using this equipment is the necessity to update expensive hardware. This was a devastating blow to our school where technology is integrated into all areas of our curriculum and instruction. Suddenly we went from 5 computers in every classroom to only 2 computers per classroom. The impact on instruction and frustration for both students and staff was felt instantly.

The Fayette Education Foundation’s generous gift of $5000 allowed us to purchase six new computers to use in classrooms with students immediately and to begin our rebuilding process. We placed these computers in our intermediate classrooms. It gave our children direct access to the internet for research, the use of word processing programs for portfolio work, and allowed them to continue to work in the curriculum-based software that is run through the school network. Now students could continue to work in the technology lab, the media center, and their own classroom in an efficient, seamless manner. Having the proper equipment in place allows our students to make the electronic world a normal part of the school day and also prepares them for the educational and work worlds that they will enter when they leave the public school system. The funds from the Fayette Education Foundation truly made a difference for kids at Veterans Park Elementary.
